How Being Photographed in Your Creative Process Deepens Your Artist Story and Reach

“It was such a wonderful experience working with Ashley! She made the photo session enjoyable and comfortable, and I’m absolutely thrilled with the beautiful results. Thank you for capturing me so perfectly!”- James Rees

A thoughtfully created gallery of portraits and process images tells your story as an artist, elevates your online presence, and offers audiences, collectors, and collaborators a behind the scenes peek at the artist’s world.

Utah-based artist and educator James Rees recently invited me to create portraits of him, his process, and creative space.

"You’re welcome to photograph anything that you think might be of interest."

I’ve seen masterpieces made in cold corners of 1 car garages, watched soulful stories of dance and movement unfold in alleyways, and met many artists feeling a little afraid to show those realities and yet when they do…

There’s story in ink spills and discarded piles of not-quite-there iterations. There’s beauty in the mundane of your process and having the bravery and wisdom to discard that lofty and heavy egoic preciousness in order to show up and be seen in it and well, that experience does what all vulnerability does so well: it allows you to connect to yourself and in turn for others to connect to you, too.

My artist session experience begins at booking. I efficiently walk you from initial jitters and ideas to setting intentions for real high-value content. We’ll consider the range of ways your work and image might be used—from professional headshots, personal portraits, and process images to specific networking needs, teaching profiles, and studio documentation.

By session day we sure of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it so you can experience being seen.

My part as witness, eye, observer, and seer is to bring the inside out, wrap light light around shapes, see order and stories in a frame from detail to space, process and tools. Whether its, “I need to redo my site” or “I need to see myself in my process” I provide a, “This is eaasssssy” session feeling and useful images that tell a true and unfiltered story of you and your creativity.
